How does lightning get neutralized after going to earth?

The conductor acts as a 'map' for the lightning, telling it where to go, in this case the ground. Once it reaches the ground, the charge is dissipated through the crust of the earth. The crust is so huge that the charge soon is spread out so much that it is harmless.
