Why are there so many volcanic eruptions and floods lately?

Very likely not any more than usual. The reporting about them is better, however. 100 years ago if there were a volcanic eruption on a remote Philippine island, it's a guarantee that people in Des Moines, Iowa didn't hear about it. Today they do.
