How can I get my 5 month old to eat 1st foods?

I'm starting my 5 month old on first foods but she wont eat it with a spoon, so I started dipping her pacifier in the applesauce but my friend told me that it was not good to do that? So how can I get my 5 month old to eat 1st foods with a spoon?
